Audemars Piguet x Swatch “Royal Pop” Has Landed… And The Watch World Has Completely Lost The Plot

Just when you thought the hype around luxury watch collaborations had peaked, along comes the new Audemars Piguet x Swatch Royal Pop collection to send Instagram, Reddit, and half the watch community into full meltdown mode.

For weeks, rumours were flying around about a possible plastic Royal Oak. Some people were excited. Some were horrified. Some were already preparing strongly worded forum posts in all caps.

Now it’s official… and somehow the reality is even more unexpected.

The new Royal Pop collection takes inspiration from the legendary Royal Oak design and blends it with Swatch’s bold, playful energy and throwbacks to the Swatch Pop from the late 80's to create something that feels completely different from anything else currently on the market.

What Is The Royal Pop?

Instead of producing a straight-up Royal Oak homage, Swatch and Audemars Piguet have gone in a completely different direction.

The Royal Pop is a collection of colourful mechanical pocket watches inspired by the iconic Royal Oak silhouette, complete with octagonal bezels, exposed screws, textured dials, and vibrant Bioceramic cases.

The collection launches with eight different variants, each bringing its own personality while still carrying recognisable AP design DNA throughout.

Why Everyone’s Talking About It

The luxury watch world can sometimes take itself a little too seriously.

The Royal Pop feels like the exact opposite of that.

Rather than creating another safe, predictable release, AP and Swatch have produced something playful, conversation-starting, and genuinely different. Whether people love it or hate it, one thing is undeniable:

Everybody is talking about it.

That alone makes this collaboration a success.

It also helps that the release arrives at a time when collectors are craving something different. We’ve seen years of endless waitlists, inflated grey market pricing, and increasingly safe releases from luxury brands. The Royal Pop throws all of that out the window and replaces it with colour, nostalgia, and chaos.

More Than Just A Gimmick

Underneath the hype, there is still some genuinely interesting watchmaking here too.

The Royal Pop uses a modified mechanical movement based on Swatch’s SISTEM51 platform, offering an impressive power reserve while keeping the experience properly tactile and collectible.

That matters.

Because while this release is clearly designed to be fun, it still feels like something enthusiasts can appreciate rather than just another disposable fashion piece.

Will They Be Hard To Get?

Absolutely.

If the MoonSwatch launch taught us anything, it’s that Swatch collaborations create queues longer than a Gregg’s at 8am. Demand is expected to be huge, and limited boutique availability will almost certainly make these difficult to secure at retail.

Final Thoughts From Luma Clara

The Royal Pop will divide opinion, and that’s precisely why it works. Some collectors will hate the idea of an AP-inspired Swatch pocket watch. Others will absolutely adore the creativity behind it.

But at a time when many releases feel increasingly predictable, this collaboration feels bold, refreshing, and genuinely fun. And honestly, the watch world could do with a bit more of that sometimes.
